First of all, I absolutely agree that Natty is an instant classic. He’s just so charmingly Southern and polite. And I love it when Jessica tells Marcus that they should “adopt Young Natty and raise him as [their] own” (29). Just imagine arriving to Princeton for freshman orientation and finding Marcus Flutie as your roommate. And not the junior year version of Marcus that dives into academics wearing a sport coat, but bearded, Buddhist Marcus.
As Anna pointed out, Jessica isn’t just writing in her journal, she’s writing to Marcus. Marcus filled eleven notebooks over two years and gives them to Jess. But she (and we) never get to read them. Marcus remains a mystery, and Jess pours everything into a notebook once again.
